What is the IB Middle Years Programme Curriculum?

The International Baccalaureate (IB) offers four different Curriculums based-on student age, IB Middle Years Programme Curriculum (MYP) (11-16 years)

The MYP curriculum framework comprises eight subject groups, providing a broad and balanced education for early adolescents.

The MYP requires at least 50 hours of teaching time for each subject group, in each year of the programme. In the final two years of the programme, carefully-defined subject group flexibility allows students to meet local requirements and personal learning goals.

Each year, students in the MYP also engage in at least one collaboratively planned interdisciplinary unit that involves at least two subject groups.

MYP students also complete a long-term project, where they decide what they want to learn about, identify what they already know, discovering what they will need to know to complete the project, and create a proposal or criteria for completing it.

The International Baccalaureate® (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) comprises eight subject groups:

1- Language acquisition.
2- Language and literature.
3- Individuals and societies.
4- Sciences.
5- Mathematics.
6- Arts.
7- Physical and health education.
8- Design.[/vc_message][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_zigzag][vc_video link=”https://youtu.be/JizsZtg6lFM” title=”MYP learners“][vc_zigzag][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Assessment and exams:

External moderation of the Middle Years Programme (MYP) personal project is mandatory.

At the same time, schools can register for optional eAssessment in all other elements of the programme – with students earning a formal, internationally-recognised certificate if they meet the success criteria.

How eAssessment works:

There are two ways the IB will be able to assess students’

1- ePortfolios of coursework, including a compulsory ePortfolio for the personal project.
2- on-screen examinations, with each exam lasting two hours.

This graph shows how these two types of assessment are divided across the MYP’s different subject groups.

On-screen examinations

To ensure that on-screen examinations are rich and authentic, media and interactive functions are used to engage students. On-screen tools include:

  • Drag and drop; cut and paste; copy and paste
  • Play, pause and replay video and animations
  • Interaction with animations and simulations
  • The ability to plot  graphs and draw lines and pictures
  • On-screen (graphing) calculator(s).
