What is the International Baccalaureate (IB)?

The International Baccalaureate (IB) offers an education for students from age 3 to 19, comprising of four programmes that focus on teaching students to think critically and independently, and how to inquire with care and logic.

The IB prepares students to succeed in a world where facts and fiction merge in the news, and where asking the right questions is a crucial skill that will allow them to flourish long after they’ve left IB programmes.

IB teachers and coordinators are developing and promoting the IB’s curriculums in almost 5,000 schools globally every day, in over 150 countries around the world.

Number of schools offering IB programmes

There were 6,311 programmes being offered worldwide, across 4,786 schools.

The Americas: 2861 schools (59.8%)
Africa, Europe, MiddleEast: 1100 schools (23%)
Asia-Pacific: 825 schools (17.2%)

The IB offers four programmes for students aged 3 to 19. The programmes can be offered individually or as a continuum. This data was last updated in February 2018.

What is the Diploma Program (DP)?

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) is a two-year educational programme for students aged 16-19 that provides an internationally accepted qualification for entry into higher education, and is recognized by universities worldwide.

Administered by the International Baccalaureate (IB), the IBDP is currently taught in English, French or Spanish, in order to participate in the IBDP, students must attend an IB school, IBDP students complete assessments in six subjects from the six different subject groups, and complete three core requirements.

Subjects are assessed using both internal and external assessments, and courses finish with an externally assessed series of examinations, usually consisting of two or three timed written examinations.

Internal assessment varies by subject (there may be oral presentations, practical work, or written works) and in most cases is initially graded by the classroom teacher, whose grades are then verified or modified, as necessary, by an appointed and external moderator.

The four IB educational programmes are:

IB Career-related Programme (CP) for students aged 16 to 19,
IB Diploma Programme (DP) for students aged 16 to 19,
IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) designed for students aged 11 to 16,
IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) for children aged 3 to 12.

Schools need to be authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization to teach these programmes
